One of my goals for your child this year is to instill a love of reading!  Reading can open up a world of information, not to mention it is an essential skill in all aspects of life.

I am excited to introduce a new reading program we will be implementing in our class this year called the Reading Bucket List.  The Reading Bucket List is a way for students to have more selection in their reading opportunities to discuss books rather than take a test or record reading minutes, and to be introduced to a wide-range of "types of reading" that they may not otherwise have been exposed to.

Here is how it works!

Each quarter, you child is responsible for reading 10 "just right" books.  This makes 40 books read over the entire school year.  *** More information regarding just right books will be discussed at Parent Night.

Your first assignment will be to make a Bucket List of 10 books you would like to read this quarter.

  • 10 genres are highlighted in red on the Bucket List.  You MUST read books that fulfill these genres by the end of the school year.

  • 20 books can be from any category on the "Bucket List"

  • The final 10 can be repeats from your favorite genre or a genre not represented on the "Bucket List."

  • Your child will be given a Reading Response Menu and Rubric.  From the menu, your child is responsible for completing one (1)  Reading Response each quarter.  I will provide examples of previous projects done by students in the past.   These products will be graded as a test grade.  They may choose any book to complete the Reading Response.   Specific dates will be discussed in class and communicated as they are established.

Many books may count for more than one genre.  Please feel free to put your book in whatever genre works best for you!
