Homework

Homework Club:  All students begin each month as a member of the Homework Club.  If students turn in all their homework each and every day they will remain in the homework club.  If they are still in the club at the end of the month, they may be rewarded with a lunch with the teacher, a Free Homework pass or a special treat.   We will not begin until the beginning of October.

Last year's celebration of students who were in the Homework club for 8 out of the 10 months!

Daily/Weekly Assignments

Math:   Daily practice of Math Facts

Research has shown that long-term success in mathematics is closely tied to strong number sense, including fluency with basic facts.  The sooner your child becomes fluent with his or her addition, subtraction and multiplication facts, the better!  Addition and subtraction of larger numbers will be much easier to master, and multiplication and division are easier to learn.  Even algebra, introduced now in elementary school will be easier to learn if your child does not have to use mental energy counting to solve addition and subtraction facts.

Spelling:  Third grade utilizes Words Their Way spelling.  You are familiar with this program as you have done it in the 2nd grade.   It is important to note that rote memorization of spelling words does not teach students how to spell.  Especially if they simply learn it for the weekly test and cannot apply it into their writing.   Please note that the students actual spelling words may not be the words that they practice in their sort but rather words that fit the spelling pattern taught for that week.   Students will have spelling homework each night and tests will occur each Friday.

Grammar:  Teaching students to be effective writers begins with proper grammar.   Gone are the boring grammar books of the old days, thank goodness!  I utilize mentor texts in the classroom to teach students grammar.  Through the use of a picture book, I choose a sentence from the book to illustrate the grammar strategy I am targeting that week. Students will brainstorm and dissect sentences each week.  Grammar quizzes will be bi-weekly.  (To begin after the beginning of the year.)

Vocabulary:  Increased vocabulary will improve reading comprehension and more creative word choice when writing.  Students will improve standardized test scores with exposure to Tier 2 words.  Tier 2 words are words that students may encounter in text.  Rich vocabulary instruction will teach students to persevere when they come across new words in texts.  Vocabulary quizzes will occur each Friday.  To begin after the beginning of the year.)

Read:  Please see the my webpage for more information on my Reading Bucket List challenge.  Students are expected to read 10 "just right" books per quarter or one (1) book per week.
